Rio Ferdinand calls for Manchester City to forfeit titles and medals
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has publicly demanded that Manchester City be stripped of their trophies and medals following the club's involvement in a high-profile investigation regarding financial rule breaches. The outspoken pundit suggested that if the club is found guilty, the honors won during the period under scrutiny should be redistributed to the runners-up.
Calls for redistribution of honors
Following an extensive four-year investigation by an independent commission, Manchester City has been linked to 115 charges related to breaches of the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules, as well as UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations. While the club maintains its innocence and intends to appeal, the potential sanctions remain a subject of intense debate.
Ferdinand, speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, argued that the integrity of the competition necessitates the removal of titles from the club. He specifically highlighted the 2011 FA Cup final, where Manchester City defeated Stoke City 1-0. Ferdinand suggested that a petition should be launched to ensure then-Stoke manager Tony Pulis receives a winner's medal, asserting that the recognition is deserved given the circumstances.
Confronting former teammates
The former England international extended his demands to the Premier League titles won by Manchester City between 2009 and 2018. During this era, Manchester United finished as runners-up on multiple occasions, including the dramatic 2011/12 season. Ferdinand stated that he expects his former England teammate Joleon Lescott, who played for City during that period, to personally hand over his winner's medal.
"If you’re found guilty, then I think you should have to give the medals back," Ferdinand said. "When I see Joleon, I’m actually going to go to his house and just say, 'Listen, hand it over.'"
Potential consequences for the club
The charges against Manchester City, which cover a significant period of their recent history, have left the club facing severe potential penalties. These include heavy fines, points deductions, and, in an extreme scenario, expulsion from the English top flight. According to the Premier League, the independent commission continues to deliberate on the case, with the footballing world awaiting a final verdict that could reshape the history of the league.
As the legal process continues, the prospect of stripping titles remains a contentious topic. While Ferdinand remains adamant that the redistribution of medals is the only fair outcome, the club continues to defend its record against the allegations brought forward by the league.
