Federal Government steps up public hygiene awareness in Abuja ahead of Global Handwashing Day

The Federal Government of Nigeria has intensified nationwide efforts to prevent infectious outbreaks, focusing on cholera, diarrhoea, and typhoid through improved hygiene practices.

Led by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, the initiative relies on community-based awareness campaigns and proper sanitation methods, according to information published by The Sun Nigeria.

Announced during a media briefing in Abuja, the strategy precedes the upcoming 2026 Global Handwashing Day, scheduled for October 15, to promote public health and combat preventable diseases.

Role of Personal Hygiene in Disease Control

Professor Joseph Utsev stated that proper handwashing with soap and clean water remains a simple and affordable way to protect public health and save lives across communities.

Speaking under the theme Be a Handwashing Hero!, the minister noted that recent outbreaks of cholera and diphtheria, alongside the COVID-19 pandemic, proved that personal hygiene is vital for controlling infectious diseases.

Infrastructure Challenges and Behavioural Change

Despite ongoing public awareness efforts, officials stressed that education alone cannot guarantee improved hygiene without adequate access to clean water, soap, and functional handwashing facilities.

The ministry emphasized that sustained public enlightenment and behavioural change are necessary to improve hygiene practices and advance Sustainable Development Goal 6.2 for universal sanitation access.

Planned Activities and Stakeholder Collaboration

The National Task Group on Sanitation and its partners have planned media campaigns, a road walk, and community sensitisation programmes to mark the upcoming global event.

Utsev urged state governments, development partners, civil society groups, and private sector operators to strengthen collaboration in expanding access to handwashing facilities and hygiene education.

Call for Media and Institutional Support

During the briefing, Permanent Secretary Dr Emanso Umobong, represented by Director Habu Jamilu, urged the media to sustain campaigns on proper handwashing to prevent avoidable diseases.

The ministry called for increased hygiene promotion in homes, schools, healthcare facilities, and workplaces, reaffirming its commitment to improving sanitation through stakeholder collaboration.
