Leal scores 29 points and leads Sada Cruzeiro to a dramatic Supercopa win over Vôlei Renata.
Outside hitter Leal delivered a stellar performance by scoring 29 points to lead Sada Cruzeiro to a dramatic victory over Vôlei Renata in the men's Supercopa final held on Friday, October 23.
The thrilling match went down to the wire in the tie-break, where Leal orchestrated a remarkable comeback after their opponents reached championship point, earning him the match MVP and the VivaVôlei award, according to information published by WEBVOLEI.
This hard-fought triumph allowed the team to secure the first national trophy of the season, bouncing back from recent struggles and setting a high standard for upcoming competitions.
Overcoming State Championship Setbacks
The victory carried massive psychological importance for the reigning Superliga champions following a difficult campaign in the Campeonato Mineiro earlier in the month.
Sada Cruzeiro suffered a surprising defeat to Praia Clube in the state semifinals, snapping a historic streak of 16 consecutive state titles and forcing the squad to finish in third place.
That disappointing outcome triggered immediate internal discussions, prompting players and the coaching staff to increase their training intensity ahead of the national showdown.
Leal Returns to Lead the Team
At 38 years of age, Leal marked a special milestone by returning to Brazilian volleyball this season, rejoining Sada Cruzeiro eight years after his departure for international clubs.
During his initial stint with the club from 2012 to 2018, the star player secured 25 titles, leading the organization to keep his iconic number 9 jersey reserved throughout his absence.
Following his first spell in Brazil, Leal gained extensive experience competing for prominent European teams in Italy, Russia, and Turkey before making his much-anticipated comeback.
Focus Shifts to Superliga Defense
Despite the euphoria of winning the Supercopa trophy, the celebration in Minas Gerais will be short-lived as the squad quickly turns its attention to the national league.
As the most successful team in the history of the tournament, Sada Cruzeiro will begin defending their Superliga title against Montes Claros at Ginásio Tancredo Neves.
The upcoming opening fixture is scheduled for Monday, October 26, with live television coverage provided by GE TV for fans across the country.
