England striker Ivan Toney appears in court facing assault charges over London nightclub brawl
England international striker Ivan Toney arrived at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to face charges of assault causing actual bodily harm. The 30-year-old forward, who currently plays for Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli, is accused of involvement in a physical altercation at a high-end nightclub in Soho, London, late last year.
Allegations of nightclub brawl in Soho
The charges against the former Brentford star stem from an incident reported on December 6, 2025, at 100 Wardour St, a well-known venue in the West End. According to witnesses at the scene, the confrontation allegedly began after a fan approached the footballer to request a selfie. The situation reportedly escalated into a brawl, during which Toney is alleged to have headbutted an individual.
Metropolitan Police officers arrived at the nightclub within thirty minutes of the disturbance. Toney was subsequently escorted from the premises by authorities. The London Ambulance Service confirmed that three individuals were assessed at the scene by medical personnel, with one person requiring transport to a hospital for further treatment.
Police investigation and formal charges
Following a detailed investigation by the Metropolitan Police, Toney was formally charged on July 31 with assault causing actual bodily harm (ABH). A spokesperson for the police force confirmed the details of the case, stating that the charge relates specifically to the reported assault on Wardour Street.
In a statement released through a representative, Toney acknowledged the legal proceedings. "Ivan acknowledges the charge and although he is naturally shocked, he looks forward to being given the opportunity to clear his name in court," the spokesperson said. The striker appeared in court today, September 24, to address the allegations as the legal process moves forward.
Career milestones and recent international duty
The legal trouble comes during a significant period in Toney's professional career. Just weeks before the alleged incident, he was part of the England squad managed by Thomas Tuchel during the World Cup. Toney featured in the national team's third-place play-off victory against France, marking a high point in his international journey.
Toney's career trajectory has seen him rise through the ranks of English football, starting at his hometown club Northampton Town before moving to Newcastle United in 2015. After several loan spells, he found significant success at Peterborough United and later at Brentford, where he scored 67 goals in 128 appearances and helped the club secure promotion to the Premier League in 2021.
In August 2024, Toney completed a high-profile transfer to the Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli for a reported fee of £40 million. Despite his move abroad, his legal obligations in the United Kingdom remain a priority as the court examines the evidence regarding the Soho incident. More information on the legal definitions of such charges can be found via the Crown Prosecution Service.
