Masai Ujiri co-founded non-profit expands sports infrastructure across all five provinces of Rwanda, reaching 53 courts in Africa.
Giants of Africa, a non-profit organisation co-founded by Dallas Mavericks team president Masai Ujiri, has successfully opened three new basketball courts in Rwanda. This major expansion extends the organisation, Built Within programme to all five provinces of the country.
The strategic openings took place on consecutive days in partnership with Rwanda, Ministry of Sports, marking a significant milestone for regional sports development. The initiative aims to empower local youth and provide professional-grade athletic facilities outside the capital city.
These latest additions bring the global total to 53 courts across 16 African countries, according to information published by Basquete. The organisation is now more than halfway towards its ambitious target of establishing 100 courts across the African continent.
Expansion Across Rwandan Provinces
The three courts were inaugurated on consecutive days in specific regional hubs. The locations include Nyagatare in the Eastern Province on Tuesday, Musanze in the Northern Province on Wednesday, and Nyanza in the Southern Province on Thursday.
These newly established facilities are expected to directly serve more than 9,500 young people, students, and other community members. The rollout demonstrates a concerted effort to decentralize sports access beyond urban centers.
Community Impact and Local Partnerships
The Nyagatare court is situated near the University of Rwanda, Nyagatare campus, and is projected to serve over 600 people. This includes both university students and young residents in the surrounding community.
In Musanze, the facility is located at GS Marie Reine Rwaza, a Catholic boarding school hosting 900 students. Meanwhile, the Nyanza facility at Igihozo St Peter boasts the largest catchment area, benefiting about 8,000 people from the school and neighboring institutions.
Strategic Growth in Rwanda
The Nyanza facility officially marks the organisation, 14th court in Rwanda. Earlier regional projects by the non-profit included important sites in Rusizi located in the Western Province, alongside developments in Kigali.
Rwanda now accounts for more than a quarter of the total courts built by the non-profit across Africa. Giants of Africa specifically credited the Ministry of Sports and the Rwanda Basketball Federation for their vital partnership.
Impacting Basketball Development Beyond Kigali
Historically, basketball development in Rwanda was heavily concentrated in Kigali, which has hosted Basketball Africa League matches at the prominent BK Arena and hosted the flagship Giants of Africa festival.
The recent provincial expansion successfully widens sports access to communities outside the capital. This strategy ensures that more young athletes have proper local facilities to play and develop their basketball skills.
