Esteban Ocon to depart Haas as Formula 1 future remains uncertain
Formula 1 driver Esteban Ocon is facing an uncertain future in the sport following the announcement that he will part ways with the Haas team at the conclusion of the current season. The 30-year-old Frenchman, a race winner at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, has been a fixture on the grid since 2016, having previously competed for Manor, Force India, and Alpine.
The search for a new opportunity
With no clear vacancies currently available on the 2027 grid, Ocon’s departure from Haas leaves his career prospects in jeopardy. Despite the lack of an immediate path forward, the driver remains defiant regarding his professional trajectory. "This is absolutely not the end of my Formula 1 career," Ocon stated in a public address.
Reflecting on his tenure with the team, Ocon noted that he leaves the project with his "head held high." He emphasized that he remains committed to the team for the remainder of the season, aiming to maximize performance in every upcoming race weekend despite the challenging circumstances he cited as being outside of his control.
Performance metrics and team dynamics
Ocon’s time at Haas has been marked by a competitive internal battle with teammate Oliver Bearman. Since joining forces, Ocon has frequently been outperformed by the British driver. In the current championship standings, Bearman sits in 13th place, holding a 13-point lead over Ocon. Statistical data further highlights this disparity, with Bearman leading the qualifying head-to-head 13-6, maintaining an average advantage of 0.144 seconds.
This trend follows a similar pattern from the previous season, where Bearman finished 13th and Ocon 15th, separated by only three points. During that campaign, Bearman also held the upper hand in qualifying, finishing ahead in 18 out of 25 sessions.
Haas acknowledges Ocon's contribution
Despite the decision to split, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu praised the Frenchman's influence on the organization. "Esteban's professionalism and commitment have proved valuable as we continue to grow as an organisation," Komatsu said.
The team principal specifically highlighted Ocon's role during the team's transition through significant regulation changes. According to Komatsu, Ocon's extensive driving experience and technical feedback were instrumental in the development of the VF-26 throughout the season.
