UFC legend Demetrious Johnson believes Jean Silva deserves a title fight against champion Alexander Volkanovski.
Mixed martial arts icon Demetrious Johnson has voiced his strong support for Jean Silva to receive the next shot at the UFC featherweight championship. Following recent division bouts, the MMA community is buzzing with potential matchups at 145 pounds.
Speaking on his podcast alongside Israel Adesanya, Johnson argued that Silva brings a dangerous and exciting style that makes him a more compelling challenger than other top contenders in the weight class, according to information published by bjpenn.
This endorsement puts Jean Silva directly into the conversation for a championship opportunity against Alexander Volkanovski, who recently secured an impressive victory in the main event of UFC 333 against Movsar Evloev.
Why Demetrious Johnson Favors Jean Silva Over Movsar Evloev
During the discussion on the PRECISION podcast, Johnson contrasted Silva's fighting style with that of Movsar Evloev. He pointed out that Evloev typically takes the least path of resistance and avoids risks inside the Octagon.
In sharp contrast, Johnson described Jean Silva as a young, athletic competitor who is entirely unafraid to go for a finish. According to the former champion, Silva brings a much more dangerous element to a potential title fight at 145 pounds.
The Personal Angle Involving Mauricio Ruffy and Alexander Volkanovski
Another fascinating layer to the potential matchup involves training camp loyalties. Johnson noted that Silva might hold a personal grievance because his friend, Mauricio Ruffy, recently joined Alexander Volkanovski in his corner for preparation.
This dynamic could fuel additional drama, as Silva might feel his friend was taken, leading to a high stakes confrontation inside the Ultimate Fighting Championship cage where Silva attempts to settle the score.
Weighing Other Contenders in the Featherweight Division
While other fighters like Aljamain Sterling are also navigating tough upcoming bouts in the division, Johnson made his preference clear. When asked to pick a challenger, the MMA legend unhesitatingly pointed toward Jean Silva.
With Volkanovski having shown vulnerability to big strikes in past bouts, a clash with a heavy hitter like Silva offers fans an intriguing championship showdown, provided the promotion greenlights the pairing.
