Former champion Jack Della Maddalena discusses the UFC 336 interim title fight and the welterweight division logjam.
Former UFC welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena is currently facing a career holding pattern alongside other top contenders. The 170-pound division has experienced a major logjam due to the extended break taken by reigning champion Islam Makhachev.
To loosen this division bottleneck, the Ultimate Fighting Championship has booked a massive co-main event for the upcoming fight card. No. 1 contender Carlos Prates will face No. 3 contender Michael Morales at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada, on Saturday, January 30, 2027.
The winner of this high stakes matchup will secure the interim welterweight title and earn the first championship opportunity against Makhachev, according to information published by mmamania.
Welterweight Division Bottleneck And Title Picture
The current state of the 170-pound weight class has left top athletes waiting for their next major career opportunities. With Islam Makhachev unlikely to defend his championship belt until mid-2027, the promotion needed a strategy to keep the division active.
Jack Della Maddalena shared his thoughts on the upcoming bout during an interview with Bedtime MMA. He noted that the booking is good for the division and properly identifies the true number one contender while the champion rests.
Carlos Prates Faces Michael Morales At UFC 336
The co-main event features a compelling clash of styles between two elite fighters. Carlos Prates enters the contest with a professional record of 24 wins and 7 losses, while the undefeated Michael Morales holds a pristine 19 and 0 record.
Della Maddalena highlighted the unique attributes of both competitors ahead of the Toronto event. He acknowledged that Prates possesses a wide array of tools to secure victory, while describing Morales as a big, powerful athlete with uncommon size.
The Stakes For The Interim Welterweight Championship
While the opening odds favor the hard hitting Brazilian slightly, the contest remains exceptionally close on paper. Carlos Prates previously defeated Jack Della Maddalena in the main event in Perth, adding extra storyline depth to the division.
UFC 336 will also feature a flyweight championship main event between titleholder Joshua Van and rival Manel Kape. Additional preliminary and main card bouts for the Toronto pay per view event are expected to be announced over the coming weeks.
