During the latest episode of his podcast, Basketball Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony questioned the offseason progress of Wembanyama, pointing out a lack of visible offensive improvements during the game, according to information published by bleache.
The lopsided defeat raised early questions about the offensive capabilities of Wembanyama as the San Antonio Spurs attempt to integrate a new three-guard lineup featuring Dylan Harper, De'Aaron Fox, and Stephon Castle.
Victor Wembanyama struggles in season opener
The offensive struggles of Wembanyama became immediately apparent as he shot a dismal 1-of-13 from the field against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Analysts and fans were particularly surprised by his 1-of-6 shooting performance inside the paint.
As a player aiming to become the face of the global league, Wembanyama faces intense scrutiny. Facing one of the toughest defensive teams in the association exposed early vulnerabilities in the offensive strategy of the San Antonio Spurs.
Offseason training priorities and new skill sets
Entering the new campaign, analysts highlighted several offseason areas where Wembanyama focused on expanding his toolkit. Reports noted his work on developing a more robust post game, including the signature Dirk Fade.
Furthermore, the young center spent a second consecutive summer training alongside legend Hakeem Olajuwon. Despite these high-profile training sessions, Carmelo Anthony argued that those developmental steps did not translate effectively onto the court.
Spurs roster changes and future outlook
The San Antonio Spurs are currently testing a new rotation strategy to support their young core. With guards like Dylan Harper, De'Aaron Fox, and Stephon Castle managing the backcourt, the offense requires time to gel properly.
